Your beliefs about stress determine whether or not its harmful to youNew studies are out showing that there are two modes to stress. The harmful version is called Threat Stress. Threat stress tells the body, "I'm overwhelmed," "I can't" and "I might die from this.' Threat stress releases cortisol, the main hormone responsible for the body's stress response and coinciding negative health implications. Living in a state of chronic stress can create a range of health issues from migraines to heart disease, insomnia, and autoimmune conditions. But studies are showing that a second kind of stress, Challenge Stress, can actually shift the bodies response system into creating greater health and wellbeing. Challenge stress is aptly named because it is created when we embrace the challenges in our life as opportunities to overcome and accomplish difficult tasks. When we shift into Challenge stress mode, our cognitive functions improve and cortisol levels lower. Challenge Stress tells the body, "This is hard, but I can do it!" Here are a few articles that talk about the different kinds of stresses and tool you can use to shift your body's stress response. Just the very nature of carefully and painlessly inserting the acupuncture needle creates a shift in the body's nervous system. Of course it does - there's a foreign object now connected to your body causing your body to communicate differently on many levels, the least of which is the nervous system. Every point has a specific function and when we combine them together we harness the synchronistic effect of those points to communicate with the body on all levels - energetically, emotionally, physically, and systemically. This is why acupuncture can create shifts in the body, not only on a physical level where it can eliminate pain as well as bring back nerve function where it's been lost, like in Bell's palsy, but it also helps those with anxiety and depression feel and think better. 2.
